Vibe

The festival originally a low key student event in 1993, this event has exploded and has already found itself into several highly rated festival lists.

7 Reasons why you should want to go to Sziget Festival:

1) You get camp on a beach by the beautiful Danube River

2) A recent article on GuardianOnline stated that 70% of its ticket buyers are actually from outside of Hungary, it's a good sign when a festival has such international demand. Sziget has become a 'Meetingpoint Europe', where Hungarians meet British, Dutch, German, Russian, Romanian, Italian, Spanish, Scandinavian festival goers.

3) Just like the crowd, the line-up is very international too. Besides the famous headliners you can find Russian ska, Serbian brass, the Macedonian queen of klezmer, Colombian hiphop, Jamaican reggae, many upcoming European talents and of course many local heroes.

4) It has a massive chill out tent with tons and tons and TONS of sofas and bean bags as well as computers for public use.

5) It's more than just a music festival. Many articles have suggested that european festivals like Sziget and Exit began not to long after eras such as the fall of the Berlin Wall, culturally this meant for many european countries festivals were a means of expression and celebration of freedom. That's why you can camp almost everywhere on the festival grounds. Just camp near the Main Stage if you want!

6) The beer is cheaper...I'll rephrase that...The beer is A HELL OF A LOT cheaper so you won't be penny pinching the whole time.

7) Sziget is in Budapest, one of the most wonderful cities in Central Europe. It has all the advantages that capitals usually have, and more! Make sure to try the Budapest spas and swimming pools. A good way to spend the day when it's warm and a very good way to clean yourself after seven days of festival ;) And for the ones that don't want to camp, Budapest has a very good offer of cheap hostels, hotels and apartments.

Stages and other entertainment

Each year Sziget has about 60 official stages, so there's plenty to do. Music can be found on the Main Stage, Party Arena (dance music), World Music Stage, Rock-Metal Stage, A38 Stage (many different kinds of music), Meduza (underground dance), Roma Stage (gypsy music), Reggae Stage, Blues Stage, Europe Stage (lots of talented bands from all over Europe), MR2 Stage (Hungarian bands), the Ambient Tent and many smaller stages.

Besides music each year you can find a giant street theatre show, many smaller theatre acts, circus acts, lots of other arts projects, a park where people can experience how it is to be disabled, a wine garden, lots of food stalls with good food, sport activities, the Magic Mirror (with a fantastic gay show each evening), non-profit organizations and much more.

Tickets

The best place to get your tickets from is from the official Szigetfest UK site its cheaper than all other ticket sites and Paylogic the company they use is secure and reliable.

Food and drink

At Sziget there's lots of choice for food and drinks at a reasonable price. A pint of beer usually costs less than 2 euros and you can get a proper meal from 4 euro.

Try typical Hungarian drinks and dishes like pálinka, feny, langós and goulasch. Also there are stalls with Greek, Indian, Italian, Serbian, Chinese or Mexican food. And of course there is also the standard festival junkfood like pizza, hamburgers and fries.
