Soundwave Music Festival is an annual music festival held across a number of major cities in Australia every February-March. Founded in 2004 and originally based in Perth, Soundwave is now the main rock, metal and punk event in the country, with Soundwave Touring also promoting tours for bands throughout the year.

Since 2007, the festival tours the country, bringing international bands to a variety of cities, destinations include Brisbane (Feb. 22), Sydney (Feb. 23), Melbourne (Feb. 28), Adelaide (March 1), and Perth (March 3).

The 2014 line up includes Green Day, Avenged Sevenfold, Alice in Chains, Placebo, Korn, HIM, Rob Zombie and many more.

Seen as the perfect meeting ground for "punks, metal-heads and misfits", it is seen as the nation's most important rock festival.

Mosh pits and circle pits are plenty, and the line-up successfully touches on all aspects of hard rock, from the childhood nostalgia of pop punk right down to the legendary sounds of artist such as Iron Maiden and Slash. Soundwave specialises in catering to a rock, metal and punk crowd, and given its origins as an extreme sports tournament complement, attendees are generally of this ilk, meaning it can be a little intimidating for weekend rock fans.

History & Facts

Soundwave originally took place in Perth as Gravity Soundwave, as part of the Gravity Games, a sporting competition in Australia. The Gravity Games took place along the Swan River in Northern Perth and Gravity Soundwave, as the musical element of the tournament, took place at the adjacent McCallum Park. It was held for the first time on 14 and 15 October 2004. In 2006, the festival was moved to December and featured performances from Aiden, local Australian bands Gyroscope, Kisschasy, Parkway Drive, The Getaway Plan and New Zealanders Goodnight Nurse Since 2008, the festival has taken place in Perth, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.
