Trivia

The origin of the Grass Pop Metal Meeting was as a local pop festival back in 1986. From a small-scale family event, the festival has travelled a long way in becoming the international heavy metal festival that it is today.

As the popularity of the family pop festival grew less over the years and finally hit rock bottom in 1995, organiser Peter Van Geel decided that it was time for a re-vamp. Guided by the most memorable acts of the preceding years (Motörhead, Ramones, Paradise Lost, and so forth) and on his own musical preferences, he decided to steer the festival towards heavier music genres.

After discussions with Werchter festival promoter Herman Schueremans, Van Geel contacted Bob Schoenmaekers, the owner of the Biebob concert venue and metal club in nearby Vosselaar. Schoenmaekers was having troubles of his own as his "Midsummer Metal Meeting" in Vosselaar had grown too big for its indoors venue and he was considering an open air festival. The initial contact soon led to close collaboration and “Graspop Metal Meeting” was born out of the collaboration.

The first Graspop Metal Meeting was held on 30 June 1996 and immediately proved to be roaring success. Over fifteen bands including Iron Maiden and Type O Negative performed to a crowd of over 10,000. There has been no looking back since then and the festival has seen a continually rising number of visitors over the years, and has had the most popular international bands in the genre performing. Since the festival's inception in 1996, Iron Maiden has been the most frequent headliner, with six appearances. Other bands which have prominently been featured are Slayer, Saxon, Megadeth and Motörhead.
