Trivia

Started in 1986 as a competition between Dutch and Belgian bands, the festival was originally called Nooderslag.

It was one of the only events where a variety of Dutch Bands could play a variety of music, ranging from Dutch hip-hop to Surf and Sixties rock and roll.

The event eventually grew to become an influential festival. With many music enthusiasts and important industry people joining the sell out crowd.

In 1993 the Noorderslag conference was started as a means for industry folk to explore and hold talks surrounding the music industry, the initial figure of 300 participants expand to 3000 participants from all over Europe.

The name Eurosonic arrived in 1999, when a collaboration started with European radio stations, all under the umbrella of the European Broadcasting Union.

The event has become key in promoting European bands as Organiser Peter Smidt states "The entire popular music industry is aimed at selling English or American products and there is hardly any interest in what is going on in Europe. European music that does not fit the Anglo-American picture hardly gets any attention."

To get an idea of the scale of Eurosonic Noorderslag, here are the figures from 2012:

  • Conference Delegates (sold out) 3,150
