Electric Zoo is an annual music festival with a heavy focus on Electronic Music. Running since 2009 the festival has won several accolades expanding to three days from two in 2011. The festival is one of the top EDM festivals in America, and regularly draws the top names in electronic music.

The festival is distinguished by the fact that it's held in New York City, on Randall's Island which is just off East Harlem in Manhattan.

Rumours

Following the death of two festival-goers in 2013, the festival was cut short on its last day. This year it faced an up-hill challenge securing the necessary permits from the city planning commission, and there were rumours circulating that the festival would be cancelled. Organisers went as far as hiring a lobbyist In the end the festival was able to secure permits to continue its run in 2014.

Line-up

The 2014 line-up includes David Guetta, Nicky Romero, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Armin van Buuren, Knife Party, Kaskade and Alesso. For a full list, click here.

Vibe

It's location, in the centre of New York, makes Electric Zoo something of a special festival. In the words of Tiest: "How often do you get to play with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop? It is a special experience, being in the middle of a city with such a huge, energetic crowd. "

Like all EDM festivals, it's rooted in rave culture and consequently drugs and alcohol play a large role. The crowds are cheerful and decked out in bright colours. People are friendly and welcoming. However, it remains to be seen what the mood will be in light of the deaths that occurred in 2013.
