Launched in 1991 by Jane's Addiction singer Perry Farrell, Lollapalooza began as a touring festival, travelling all over the USA.
The festival was originally started as a farewell show for the band, when organising it Perry Farrell was influenced by Gathering Of The Tribes Music Festival (a two day music festival organized by The Cult's Ian Astbury in 1990). The Gathering Of The Tribes Festival was seen as a highly influential event as it mixed all genres of music from Rap to Metal, which has inspired the Lollapalooza line-up ever since.
Lollapalooza prides itself on eclecticism and the open-mindedness of the crowd to support it. When the weather is hot the days are busy but relaxed with the collective energy ramping up as the bigger bands take to the stages during the evening.
2014 sees Eminem, Outkast and Kings of Leon all headline. Arctic Monkeys, Skrillex and Calvin Harris are among the acts too which also includes Lorde, Nas, Interpol, Foster the People and local Chicago hip hop star, Vic Mensa.
Sunday night features a mystery act: Kausea, which are billed to play before the headliners. In previous years this slot has been filled by DJ acts, so it is rumoured that an electronic artist will play again in 2014.
