Electric Picnic started out as a small one day festival that provided an alternative to larger and more expensive contemporary music festivals. The festival was different in that it had many different attractions and was not solely a music festival.

2012 Stages

Organisers have confirmed the following stages:

BODY & SOUL Back once again with its trademark twisting wonderland of bespoke stages, hand picked installations, quirky corners and hidden alcoves, BODY&SOUL is set to light up its place as the central creative beacon of Electric Picnic for the ninth year in a row.

SALTY DOG Standing tall among the giants at Electric Picnic, this proud shipwreck (French in origin, French in hygiene), emerging out of the fallen masts and scattered rigging, promises to round up the fringes of society and let them loose on unsuspecting passers-by. Sea shanties from pub-tanned codgers, bluegrass at the mercy of corn-nibblers down from the hills, blues solos from tinny-swilling double bassists with bockety eyes, and the occasional cracking set from a bewildered rock-star kidnapped from the main stage and spirited into the forest... these titans will walk upon the timber deck of the boat, to the roars of the Salty Dog's devoted followers, get swallowed into the over-eager fog of dry ice, and have the time of their lives.

TRENCHTOWN 2012 is set to be the biggest TrenchTown Party yet. As Jamaica marks its 50th year of independence, come celebrate BIG, in true ‘Yard’ style as The Jamaican Village turns up da heat & brings you on a Journey of its history. 5 decades of Live Music, Sound Systems, Dance, Art, Performance, food and Film in our on-site Cinema.

**THE FOREST PRESENTS: ALGRORHYTHM ** The Forest Stage of Electric Picnic takes an all new twist this year with a new area and a new direction.. Three of the hottest collectives in Ireland each take a day and night to showcase what they do best. Three 12 hour stints of all things House and all things Techno. Nights are being hosted by both fresh and established promoters over the course of the Festival weekend.

Trivia

In 2004 and 2005, the festival was compared to Burning Man and because of its small size it received critical acclaim. However, due to the Picnic’s popularity it has lost its unique small and cosy ambience and has become far more main stream, rivalling the likes of Glastonbury, Roskilde and its closest competitor Oxygen, which is a festival also held in Ireland.
